Chows (for short) usually attach themselves to one person even though they will have affection for the whole family. They are an excellent guard dog and watch dog, they will surely protect you against strangers! Chow Chows are well-mannered dogs, and they are quite good with children.

Chows are independent, a little stubborn and pushy. They are highly intelligent, so they will learn from obedience training, but still may choose not to obey. They make great watchdogs as they are naturally territorial. They are protective of their owners and their children and they only bark for a reason.

Chow Chows are very loyal to their master too, even though they may act reserved sometimes. They can be quite a handful with passive owners, but if you put them with an owner who has natural authority then they will be polite, patient and well rounded, making an excellent family companion.
