Derby the dog suffers from a physical abnormality leg malformation and was rescued by Tara Anderson from the Peace and Paws Dog Rescue. Tara decided to help the dog by utilizing her skills as a project manager at a 3D printing company. There seems to be endless uses for 3D printing, but giving an abandoned dog the chance to walk again has to be on top of the list as one of the most heartwarming things you can do for a helpless dog.

Derby was born with really small forelegs as well as no front paws. His condition landed him in the hands of Tara Anderson from the Peace and Paws Dog Rescue. Tara works at a 3D printing company, who quickly got to work using the firm’s technology to carve out a solution for Derby’s condition.

To help Derby improve his manner of walking, Tara as well as her coworkers from 3D Systems used their 3D-printing knowledge to create a set of prosthetic legs that will allow Derby to walk as well as run in a much more comfortable position.

The disc-shaped prosthetic was designed to keep him in a semi-slumped position, allowing him time to get used to wearing the legs while still keeping his unusual, yet familiar walk.

After testing a number of designs for Derby’s prosthetic legs, Anderson did new version of prosthetic that enhanced the length of the legs utilizing a figure-eight design. The new prosthetic legs leveled Derby’s posture, giving him a straight back as well as about equal-length legs.

Moving forward, Derby can now walk as well as run with very little strain on his back. His new prostheses now allows him to sit like a healthy dog and walk at his proper height, both of which he’s never been able to do.
